Born in Strasburg, her parents were Wesley Daniel and Mary Eliza (Mitchell) Hall. Her father was a farmer.
In 1937, Hilda married Marquis Metts, a salesman from Mt. Rainier, Maryland. That marriage did not last.
In 1943, she married Ernest Lee Brown. At that time, she was working in the laboratory of the American Viscose Corp. (later called Avtex Fibers) and lived in Warren County. Her new husband, born in Shenandoah County, was stationed at the Congaree Army Air Base in Columbia, South Carolina.

Identified in 2007 by Graham Conner with help from his sister. She remembered that Hilda had a daughter named Joan Hall Metts who, at the time, lived in California.
