She was a daughter of David Lemuel and Zelia (Hoover) Wakeman. She grew up on a farm west of Edinburg.
Over the course of her life, she married several times. Her married names included Richman, Newland, Mathers, and her last husband was Curtis Dowl Whetzel.
Her children included: Richard, Barbara, and David Richman; and Ruth Virginia Whetzel.
When she died, her occupation was listed as retired dental assistant.
