He was born on 25 March 1925 in Woodstock, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in April 1942 and served as a Private First Class when he was discharged.
He qualified as a rifle marksman and served in the Pacific area from 1 September 1942 to 25 February 1944. He participated in action against enemy forces at Bougainville from 1 November 1943 to 15 December 1943.
He was discharged in August 1945 from Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina, and given a travel allowance to get him to Washington, DC.
