Photograph of a form pertaining to Joseph Martin Hines' discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps in late 1945.

He was born on 1 December 1923 in Toms Brook, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in October 1942 and served as a Private First Class when he was discharged.

He qualified as a rifle marksman, librarian, and guard patrolman, and served in the Asiatic-Pacific area from 13 Jan 1944 to 15 October 1945. He participated in action against enemy forces on Roi-Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll (1 Feb 1944 to 2 Feb 1944); Saipan (15 June 1944 to 9 July 1944; Tinian (24 July 1944 to 7 Aug 1944; Iwo Jima. (19 Feb 1945 to 16 March 1945).

He was discharged from Bainbridge, Maryland, and given a travel allowance to get him to Washington D.C.
