He was born on 30 March 1924 in Mt. Jackson, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in June 1942 and served as a Corporal when he was discharged.
He qualified as a rifle marksman and light machine gun crewman. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific area from 17 June 1944 to 19 December 1945. He participated in action against enemy forces at Saipan (10 July 1944 to 24 July 1944); Tinian (25 July 1944 to 1 August 1944); and Okinawa, (1 April 1945 to 14 April 1945).
He was discharged from Bainbridge, Maryland, and given a travel allowance to get him to Washington D.C.
