Doris was the daughter of Oliver Edward Funkhouser and Bertie Ellen (Hepner) Funkhouser.
She grew up in Orkney Springs, VA along with her sisters Mildred Kohlman and Shirley Baker. Her stepmother was Ida Funkhouser.
She graduated from Triplett High School in Mt. Jackson, and was living and working in Woodstock when she met her future husband Millson S. French, Sr.
They married in 1947 and spent the next 68 years together, serving the community at Walton & Smoot Drugstore and raising five children.
