Strasburg (Va)

Description

Photograph of Wyatt's Recreation Hall building located almost next to the Old Mill (or Spengler's Mill) on the southern edge of Strasburg on Route 11.

Initially, the property included 4 acres and bordered the river behind it. The owner, Mr. Wyatt, auctioned the bathing beach, equipment and the 4 acres on July 29, 1939, leaving him with the Recreation Hall only.

Several advertisements from 1939 and 1940 in the Northern Virginia newspaper advertise that square dances were held every Wednesday and Saturday night at the hall. One ad from 1940 noted the admission was 40 cents per couple.

The 1938 and 1939 Northern Virginia Checkers Tournament was held at Wyatt's Recreation Hall as well.

The building still stands today and has been converted into apartments.
