Photo of two separate portrait photographs of Bernice (Lam) Smoot in her graduation cap and gown.

Bernice was born in Arlington, the daughter of Clarence William and Ava Alice (Andes) Lam.

She graduated from Central High School in 1963 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Madison College (now called James Madison University) in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

She married Ronald Leo Smoot in 1975. They divorced in 1984.

Bernice later earned her Master of Education in Reading and a Master of Education in School Administration from James Madison University. She retired from Rockingham County Public Schools after many years of teaching various grade levels and subject areas.

After retirement, Elizabeth was a partner with Winston Weatherholtz Construction.
