Helen was the daughter of Calvin and Alice (Windle) Gochenour.
She married Stanley Palivoda, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1937, in Washington D.C. The couple had two children together, but divorced in 1954.
Her second husband was Bernan Everett "Bob" Howard (1915-1979). He was originally from Stanly County, North Carolina. They are buried together in Alonzaville.
Her children, Barbara and Stanley Jr., grew up in Arlington, Virginia.
