Ruth was the daughter of William Luther and Mary Ellen (Gochenour) Wetzel. They lived on a farm just outside of Woodstock on property that is now owned by the town.

Her first husband was James Berlin George. The couple had a son together but that marriage did not last.

Her second husband, also divorced, was Russell Edwin Shaver, a 45-year old service station attendant originally from West Virginia. They married in 1960 in Woodstock.

Ruth is remembered for having owned and operated the Stonewall Terrace Gift Shop and opened the R and R Trading Post, a family restaurant, gift shop and gas station.

She was also partners with Dick and Elaine Strawderman in the Double S Catering Service for many years.

After she retired, she worked in the cafeteria at Dunham Bush and later was a demo representative at Costco.

She is buried in Alonzaville, Shenandoah County.
