Harry was born in Edinburg to Wade Hampton and Stella May (Lineweaver) Copenhaver. He grew up on a farm in the Madison District where he was the youngest of at least five children, mostly brothers.
Lois Jean Bowers was born to Charles William and Zelda Frances (Golladay) Bowers. Like her husband, she was born in Edinburg. Her family also farmed. She had an older brother and a younger sister.
Lois and Harry married in 1955. Harry was 20 years old and worked as a Huckster. Lois was 17.
