Edith was the daughter of Calvin and Alice B. (Wendle) Gochenour, a farming couple on Fairview Road near Woodstock. She was one of at least thirteen children.
Edith was born December 24 1902 to parents John Eckard and Vertie Eckard. She grew up near the Hamburg community with three siblings. At one point her father ran one of the community's stores.
